There are some things you can never escape from - the death of your son, your wife's early dementia, your unrequited love, your alcoholism. Firewatch is about running away from things that you can't run away from, and what happens when you try. The only ending that rings true is for Henry to go back and face what's happening to Julia and deal with how he feels, not just try to escape from reality.Įxactly. He was already slipping into alcoholism before taking the Firewatch job. I believe that, were Henry to run off with Delilah, his guilt over "abandoning" Julia would destroy him. People with empathy and love for someone else can't act like this. He may be able to focus solely on Delilah to forget about Julia, but it's such a false narrative. But then Henry would have successfully ran away from his problems. So how should Henry's story end? Well, Henry could have met up with Delilah and run off to have an affair.
